The film's story was written by Rajamouli's father V. Vijayendra Prasad, who randomly told him a story about Sivagami, a woman who carries a baby in her hand while crossing a river, and a few years later about Kattappa, which intrigued Rajamouli. His fascination with Mahabharata and the tales of Amar Chitra Katha and Chandamama further fuelled his interest in the story. However, it took the writers three months to complete the final draft. The soundtrack and background score were composed by M. M. Keeravani, while the cinematography, production design, and VFX were handled by K. K. Senthil Kumar, Sabu Cyril and V. Srinivas Mohan respectively.

The film was made on a budget of ₹180 crore ($28 million),[b] making it the most expensive Indian film at its time of release. The film opened worldwide on 10 July 2015 along with the dubbed versions in Hindi and Malayalam. It received national and international acclaim for Rajamouli's direction, story, visual effects, cinematography, themes, action sequences, music, and performances, and became a record-breaking box office success. With a worldwide box office gross of ₹600–650 crore, it became the highest-grossing Telugu film and the second highest-grossing Indian film worldwide. It is currently the fourth highest-grossing Telugu film of all time. Its Hindi dubbed version also broke several records by becoming the highest-grossing dubbed film in Hindi of all time. Both budget and box office records have since been surpassed by Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, the highest-grossing film in India of all time.

Baahubali: The Beginning along with its successor, is widely regarded as one of the most influential films of Indian cinema. It became the first Indian film to be nominated for American Saturn Awards, receiving five nominations at the 42nd ceremony, including Best Fantasy Film and Best Supporting Actress. It received several accolades such as the National Film Award for Best Feature Film, and the National Award for Best Special Effects. It won five awards from ten nominations, including Best Telugu Film, Best Director - Telugu for Rajamouli and Best Supporting Actress - Telugu for Ramya Krishnan respectively, at the 63rd Filmfare Awards South.

Here are some key technologies employed in making the Bahubali films

1. Visual Effects (VFX)

Baahubali heavily relied on VFX to create its mythical world, from massive war scenes to grand palaces and landscapes.

Several international VFX studios, such as Makuta VFX and Firefly, were involved in creating the intricate digital environments, such as the kingdom of Mahishmati, waterfalls, and vast armies.

Specific software used includes Autodesk Maya for 3D modeling and animation, Houdini for effects simulations (such as water, fire, and debris), and Nuke for compositing.

2. Green Screen Technology

Many of the elaborate scenes, especially battle sequences and large set pieces, were shot on green screens with background elements added later using VFX.

This allowed filmmakers to simulate massive environments that would have been impossible or prohibitively expensive to create practically.

3. CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery)

Significant portions of the landscape, cityscapes, animals (like the bull and elephant in battle scenes), and armies were created using CGI.

The waterfalls and cliffs in the introduction of Baahubali are one of the finest examples of CGI in the film.

4. Motion Capture

To create realistic and fluid motion in the fight scenes and larger-than-life action sequences, motion capture technology was used.

Actors’ movements were digitally captured and transferred to animated characters or CG doubles.

5. 3D Printing

For props, costumes, and even certain set designs, 3D printing was used to create detailed pieces quickly and with precision.

This reduced time for artisans and designers in making elaborate weapons, armor, and jewelry.

6. High-Definition Cameras

The movie was shot on Arri Alexa XT Plus cameras, which are renowned for their high resolution and dynamic range, allowing for crisp visuals and detailed textures.

The clarity provided by the camera equipment helped the VFX team ensure that the CGI and live-action components blended seamlessly.

7. Digital Matte Painting

The film’s wide landscapes and skies were often achieved using matte painting techniques, where artists digitally painted parts of the scene and integrated them into the live-action footage.

These techniques were crucial for creating the sprawling landscapes and majestic palaces seen in the film.

8. Animatronics

In some scenes, animatronics were used to create lifelike movements for animals that interacted closely with actors. The bull during the famous fight scene with Bhallaladeva is one such example where animatronics and CGI were combined.

9. Rotoscoping

Rotoscoping was used to remove elements from scenes, such as wires or green screen backgrounds, and integrate live-action performances with digital backgrounds.

10. Sound Technology

Baahubali utilized Dolby Atmos, which provided a highly immersive audio experience. This sound technology created a 360-degree sound field, enhancing the movie’s dramatic effect.

By blending traditional filmmaking with the latest technological advancements, Baahubali set a new benchmark for Indian cinema, not only in storytelling but also in terms of scale and technical execution.
